(CNN) -- Ladies (and gentlemen): Can you find the G-spot?






Women everywhere have read or heard that they may possess a secret pleasure zone inside their bodies that, if stimulated correctly, yields intense pleasure and even orgasm.






But this so-called G-spot has never been precisely identified as a concrete biological entity. Scientists are still arguing over what it is and whether it exists at all.






Researchers at King's College London in the United Kingdom have brought the elusive G-spot to the forefront with a study of more than 1,800 female twins. The study suggests that there is no genetic basis for the G-spot and that environmental or psychological factors may contribute to whether a woman believes that she has a G-spot. The new study is published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.






But the lead study author, clinical psychologist Andrea Burri, isn't sure that the question was asked in a way that accurately got the information the researchers were seeking, as reflected in the study's discussion section.






Her team did not physically examine the women for the presence of G-spots but instead gave participants a survey asking whether they believed that they had a "so called G-spot, a small area the size of a 20p coin on the front wall of your vagina that is sensitive to deep pressure?" (A 20p coin is about the size of an American nickel.)






They found that 56 percent of respondents answered "yes" and that there was no genetic correlation. But only about 30 percent said they were able to achieve orgasm during intercourse, which may indicate that women were confused by the G-spot question because stimulation of the G-spot is supposed to induce orgasm, she said.






The definition of G-spot in the study is too specific and doesn't take into account that some women perceive their G-spots as bigger or smaller, or higher or lower, said Debby Herbenick, research scientist at Indiana University and author of the book "Because It Feels Good."






"It's not so much that it's a thing that we can see, but it has been pretty widely accepted that many women find it pleasurable, if not orgasmic, to be stimulated on the front wall of the vagina," said Herbenick, who was not involved in the study.






If at the end of the day, someone's invented something and they feel pleasure from it, then I think that's great.

The study also found correlations with personality components in women who did report having G-spots: For instance, these women tended to be more extroverted, arousable and open to experience, which may indicate a psychological component to the G-spot, Burri said.






More research is necessary to make more conclusive statements about whether the G-spot has a physiological basis, experts say.






"I don't think that these are invented experiences at all," Herbenick said. "And if at the end of the day, someone's invented something and they feel pleasure from it, then I think that's great."






The G-spot has been so difficult to identify because it is more of a physiological change -- akin to swallowing or urinating -- than an anatomic structure such as a nipple, said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego, California, who oversees the peer review process for the Journal of Sexual Medicine.






But a recent study that adds credence to the G-spot concept. French researchers Odile Buisson and Pierre Foldès did ultrasounds of a small number of women having intercourse with men. By looking at the changes in the vagina, the researchers found physiological evidence of the G-spot. This study is under review at the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Goldstein said.






The G-spot is named after Dr. Ernst Grafenberg, a gynecologist known for his research on female genitalia. He described this pleasure zone of the vagina in a 1950 paper.






The 1982 book "The G Spot: And Other Discoveries About Human Sexuality" made the term "G-spot" popular.






A small study by Italian researchers in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2008 found that women who were able to achieve vaginal orgasms had thicker tissue between the vagina and the urethra, where the G-spot is said to reside.






A minority of women say they ejaculate when they have a G-spot orgasm. Some sex researchers say this fluid comes from a gland that's near the G-spot area.






Men also have a G-spot of sorts, below the scrotum and above the anus, Goldstein said, although it has not gotten as much attention as the more mysterious female G-spot.






Experts agree that the idea of the G-spot has put pressure on both women and their male partners to find some kind of hidden treasure that leads to orgasm from the penis alone.






"Initially, it was a good concept, because who wouldn't like the idea of 'push a button and get the best orgasm ever?' " Burri said. But those women who can't orgasm from vaginal intercourse may feel inadequate, and knowing that the G-spot may not exist can take some pressure off.






Women should explore their bodies, find out what they like, and communicate that information to their partners, Herbenick said.






"Whether you call it your G-spot or the front wall of your vagina, or if you make up a silly name for it ... at the end of the day, it's what you like and how your body works," she said.

Study Says Women With Mate Get Heavier

It is widely known that women tend to gain weight after giving birth, but now a large study has found evidence that even among childless women, those who live with a mate put on more pounds than those who live without one.


Overweight...The differences, the scientists found, were stark.

After adjusting for other variables, the 10-year weight gain for an average 140-pound woman was 20 pounds if she had a baby and a partner, 15 if she had a partner but no baby, and only 11 pounds if she was childless with no partner. The number of women with a baby but no partner was too small to draw statistically significant conclusions.


There is no reason to believe that having a partner causes metabolic changes, so the weight gain among childless women with partners was almost surely caused by altered behavior. Moreover, there was a steady weight gain among all women over the 10 years of the study.


This does not explain the still larger weight gain in women who became pregnant. The lead author, Annette J. Dobson, a professor of biostatistics at the University of Queensland in Australia, suggested that physiological changes might be at work.

“Women’s bodies may adjust to the increased weight associated with having a baby,” Dr. Dobson said. “There may be a metabolic adjustment that goes on when women are pregnant that is hard to reverse. This would be more consistent with our findings than any other explanation.”


The study covered more than 6,000 Australian women over a 10-year period ending in 2006.
At the start, the women ranged in age from 18 to 23. Each woman periodically completed a survey with more than 300 questions about weight and height, age, level of education, physical activity, smoking status, alcohol consumption, medications used and a wide range of other health and health care issues.


By the end of the study, published in the January issue of The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, more than half the women had college degrees, about three-quarters had partners and half had had at least one baby. Almost all of the weight gain happened with the first baby; subsequent births had little effect.


Also by the end of the study period, there were fewer smokers and risky drinkers than at the beginning, more women who exercised less and a larger proportion without paid employment.


But even after adjusting for all of these factors and more, the differences in weight gain among women with and without babies, and among women with and without partners, remained.
Despite the study’s limitations — weight was self-reported, for example, and the sample size diminished over time because people dropped out — other experts found the results valuable.


“It’s interesting and brings out some important points,” said Maureen A. Murtaugh, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Utah who has published widely on weight gain in women. Perhaps, she suggested, a more active social life may help explain why women with partners gain more weight.


“Think of going to a restaurant,” Dr. Murtaugh said. “They serve a 6-foot man the same amount as they serve me, even though I’m 5 feet 5 inches and 60 pounds lighter.”


The study included only women, but the researchers cited one earlier study that showed an increase in obesity among men who had children, adding further evidence that social and behavioral factors are part of the explanation.
Dr. Dobson said the finding of weight gain among all the women, with families or without, was troubling.
“This is a general health concern,” she said. “Getting married or moving in with a partner and having a baby are events that trigger even further weight gain. “From a prevention point of view, one can look at these as particular times when women need to be especially careful.”

AFTER all these years of marketing Barbie in all her glorious incarnations — and outfits — Mattel is about to gear up to sell a new plastic collectible figure with a different, but still distinctive, look: a 7-foot-tall wrestler named the Big Show.
Pro wrestling’s true appeal lies with its soap opera elements, says W.W.E.’s chairman, Vince McMahon.

Mattel, the world’s largest toy manufacturer, is scheduled to announce on Monday a deal to become the new toy partner of World Wrestling Entertainment, the corporate titan of the pro wrestling world and producer of two of the most successful — and longest-running — franchises in television, “Smackdown” and “Raw.”

Starting this week, a new line of toys derived from W.W.E. characters will hit store shelves, a result of two years of development by Mattel. The toys will include action figures of W.W.E. stars like the Big Show and his polar opposite Rey Mysterio (about a foot and a half shorter), as well as roped rings for the figures to wrestle in and toy-size championship belts with special lighting. The deal also includes significant advertising commitments from Mattel in the W.W.E. shows.

If it seems incongruous that a company that depends on selling to children would want to nestle in with wrestling, you may not have been paying close attention to how effectively W.W.E. — which knows a thing or two about many incarnations itself — has reinvented its particular form of entertainment.



But the people at Mattel have been paying attention. Tim Kilpin, the general manager of Mattel Brands, said in a telephone interview, “We’ve always followed the sports and entertainment at W.W.E., and we’ve always admired what they do.”
What they do is put on wrestling shows that are much more about characters and plotlines than they are about matches, wins and pins. But what is new at W.W.E. in recent years is the tone that content has taken. Wrestling, which has been through a rock music phase and an adult-oriented phase, has gone full-blown PG.
“We were always PG on our ‘Smackdown’ show,” said Vince McMahon, the chairman of W.W.E. But the “Raw” show was quietly shifted to meet PG content standards starting about a year ago.
“We’re about the only variety show on television,” Mr. McMahon said, pointing to the roster of guest starts on his shows this season, which has included Jeremy Piven of “Entourage”; the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger; and the Rev. Al Sharpton. “We sell fun,” Mr. McMahon said.

WE SELL FUN

The fun does involve huge men like the Big Show hurling other huge men around the ring — and sometimes outside of it. But the true appeal, Mr. McMahon said, comes down to “the soap opera elements, the entertainment elements.”



As Mr. McMahon put it, “It’s still about protagonists and antagonists” — or, in the parlance of the genre, “baby faces” and “heels.” (And Mr. McMahon has been both types in the course of acting as his own long-running character, “Mr. McMahon,” on the shows). But it is now done with more twinkle than liniment in the eye.



And it is all in high definition. “HD has made our programs really popular,” Mr. McMahon said.



“It’s about the only 52-week, live, DVR-proof show going,” said Chris McCumber, the executive vice president of marketing for the company’s cable partner, USA Network. The “Raw” show is new every week of the year, and because it is live with sports elements, Mr. McCumber suggested, it is less likely to be recorded on a digital video recorder and played back later — with the commercials skipped.



He said that “Raw” was up 17 percent in total viewers on USA over the last year.



For Mattel, one of the most significant statistics was growth among viewers in the market that it is intensely interested in: children. About 22 percent of the W.W.E. audience is younger than 18, and while Mr. McMahon emphasized that there had been significant growth in the shows among women viewers, what most attracted Mattel was the steady appeal to “the audience we’re trying to reach,” as Mr. Kilpin put it.



As in: boys. Mattel sells toys like Hot Wheels to them and is looking for other products that will appeal to that group.



“We do a lot of research to find out what boys are excited about,” Mr. Kilpin said. Wrestling presented an opportunity to reach “a certain type of boy we didn’t have in our portfolio.” That is a boy, he said, “who loves authentic, athletic performers and is oriented toward entertainment.”



Much work went into devising a new technique that Mr. Kilpin labeled “flex force,” which will allow the new action figures to do moves used by the wrestlers on TV. The company is also paying attention to what Mr. Kilpin calls “the collector market,” which consists of older wrestling fans who collect the figures.



As an added appeal to them, he said, Mattel is making the figures “in a scale that is accurate.” Thus the Big Show’s action figure will tower over Rey Mysterio’s.







For W.W.E., the deal with Mattel — it is being called a multiyear agreement with no length or dollar amount specified — is another statement of the enduring appeal of wrestling programming. Donna Goldsmith, the chief operating officer of W.W.E., said the company sought proposals from toy companies in 2007, anticipating the conclusion of its deal with Jakks Pacific at the end of 2009.



“Every significant toy company made a bid,” Ms. Goldsmith said. “Mattel just blew us away.” She added, “Mattel just gets us.”



And why not? Wrestling, according to Mr. McMahon anyway, has exactly the right appeal for the home of Barbie. “It’s Americana, basically,” he said.
